The Stanford Mansion Campaign

A Public/Private Partnership
  • Bringing the Stanford Mansion back to life is costing roughly $20 million and requires a public/private partnership to make it possible. Neither the state nor private donors are willing or able to do this job alone.

  • In 1991, a state-wide group of business and political leaders, led by California First Lady Gayle Wilson, Senator Becky Morgan, and Sacramento businessman Peter McCuen, formed the Leland Stanford Mansion Foundation. The Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization created with the sole purpose of conducting a major private sector fund-raising campaign to match public funds needed to restore the Mansion.

  • The need for the Mansion to serve as an executive protocol meeting place is strongly endorsed by late Governors Pat Brown and Ronald Reagan, as well as Former Governors George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson, and Gray Davis.

  • First Lady of California, Maria Shriver, is Honorary Chair. Former California First Ladies Gayle Wilson and Sharon Davis, together with Senator Becky Morgan, are the Honorary Co-Chairs of this Foundation. Former California First Lady Bernice Brown and Former First Lady of the United States Nancy Reagan are members of the Honorary Board.

  • This fund-raising campaign is one of the most visible and successful examples of a public/private partnership in the Capital. Ironically, the transcontinental railroad, in which Governor Stanford played a leadership role while living in the Mansion, was one of the first major public/private partnerships in the country.

  • California's leading corporations, foundations, organizations, and private citizens are helping to make this project possible with their financial support in combination with public funds through State Parks.

  • Once restored, the Mansion will be permanently maintained and managed by the California Department of Parks. The Foundation is creating a $2 million endowment to help cover major curatorial needs and support programs it hosts in the Mansion that help to foster business development for California.
